Canberra’s Food Story Origin

Farming runs deep in Majura Valley, where history, heritage, and hard work continue to shape the land.

Majura Valley has a rich and layered history, shaped by generations of farmers, settlers, and traditional landowners. Farming began here in the early 1800s and has continued ever since, making it one of the ACT’s oldest continually farmed landscapes. The valley was once dotted with soldier settler blocks, small orchards, vineyards, and market gardens that fed the growing region. Its fertile soils and natural springs made it a vital part of Canberra’s early food system.

Despite the city’s expansion, Majura Valley has retained its rural character and community — a rare and valuable connection to the region’s agricultural past. Today, local farmers continue to build on that legacy, adapting to modern challenges while preserving the land’s productive roots. From paddock to plate, the valley remains a living example of what’s possible when good food, good people, and good land come together.

Why Majura Valley Matters

Our best growing land should grow food

The Majura Valley, including the fertile lands of Pialligo, is home to the best soils in the ACT. These deep, well-drained soils are found on gently undulating floodplains, ancient terraces, and minor aeolian deposits formed from alluvium — particularly along the Woolshed Creek floodplain, which flows into the Molonglo River just upstream of Lake Burley Griffin. This is not marginal land — it’s widespread, productive, arable country, long recognised for its agricultural value.

With a changing climate and increasing pressure on urban land, this region represents our greatest opportunity to secure a resilient local food system. We should be focused on protecting and farming these prime soils — not paving over them. The future of food in Canberra depends on the decisions we make today, and there’s no better place to start than right here in the Majura Valley.
